Ask for memories....

Hi there

MaryAnn, great idea to use C2 for adding people's ideas, here's one that came along a few weeks back. I received an email from an ex British Navy man who was asking about a specific camp in Taiping nearby. He felt I might have some answers. In fact I did.

I also did him a favor to send him a few pics about the camp in the present day. And, I asked if he had something to share about his days in the late 1950's when he was stationed here.

He send me a series of photos of those days which I reworked to 2 pages, here's one:

As a result I started to get more e-mails from people who had served/lived in those days and who had stories and photos to share.

Although Taiping is only siteways related to my Pangkor site, I felt this could give it a good twist. After all, the stories die with the people who are in their 60's at least. Thus you have a new (old) group of people who might be interesting in participating. And why not... the more people share with you the better. Give it a thought...

 A visitor to my site offers to share his story

Hi Mary Ann,

here is my report :-)

I just set up www.penangheritagecity.com on 17th July 08.

I want to get away from other typical Penang sites which just promotes the hotels and beaches.

To give a neat spin and to leverage the fact that Penang had just been inscripted by UNESCO as a heritage city on 7th July 08, I gave the domain name as such.

So far it has 12 pages, average visitors is only about 10 a day but the audience is so targeted that today I got an email from a guy who wants to share the story of his great great great grandfather who was one of the founders/merchants in Penang back in the 19th century! It would be a great content on the historical aspect for my site.

Besides that I am helping a school whose teacher also contacted me last two weeks through the site to prepare for a contest entitled: heritage buildings in Penang.

I am so honored, and so excited beyond words.

It just shows that by choosing the right niche with low supply and with the help of SBI! methods we should all do very well.

Peter, what a wonderful use of C2.0! Not only does it help your site, but it brings together people who haven't seen each other for decades. I suppose it is nice to keep "on topic" on your site, but it is even nicer to just be nice to visitors. And you do that quite well!
